Forget sexy leads, good behavior is a matter of place, place, place

Women who are not what they claim to be: the dish of the day on television soap operas of recent times. Think Invent Anna, The stall, Pieces of her and the new Underbelly series. All stories of women pulling a swifty, even though they think they’re doing the right thing. good behavior is a few years old, originally screened in 2016 and 2017 (and previously on subscription streaming), but it follows the same path: a woman pretending to be someone she’s not.

Michelle Dockery, aka Downton Abbey Lady Mary Crawley, plays Letty Raines, an ex-con and drug addict who listens to motivational podcasts (“I live by my positive choices”) and likes to don a wig before sneaking into the hotel rooms of the wealthy. She’s trying to get right, you know, so she can get custody of her son back, but Letty keeps doing bad things.

Enter sexy Argentinian hitman Javier (Juan Diego Botto), who kidnaps Letty after she interrupts one of his jobs. Will-they-won’t-they-connect isn’t really a question – they make a good pair in and out of bed, as Letty comes over to help Javier with his day job.

good behavior glistens with its South Carolina decor — you can almost smell the humidity and how sticky the tables are in the dive bars, while the luxury hotels ooze wealth. That’s because it was filmed on location in Wilmington, North Carolina, using local supermarkets, truck stops, and hotels. It feels real, pretty much the same as Easttown Mare made with sound filming on location in the Philadelphia suburb of Delco.

And it’s there good behavior at the top of one of Netflix’s current favorites: Pieces of her. Toni Collette’s drama Ladykiller is set in the US – in the fictional Belle Isle in Georgia – but was filmed on the NSW central coast and around Sydney. It looks Australian, it feels Australian and, well, you know the saying: if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, it’s obviously an Australian show because no one in America has a electric kettle (look for it). Yes, Toni Collette, I’m looking at you and your quickly boiling cups of tea in your very Australian kitchen.

I’ve watched enough American TV to know what American homes look like, and most of the time it’s not a brown brick house at the end of a cul-de-sac on the Central Coast. The bubble was burst with Pieces of herand it’s hard to be brushed off when all you’re wondering is where they got all those left-hand-drive cars.

Location matters, and that’s what makes good behavior a winner at one level. I feel like I’m in South Carolina ’cause they or they are in the Carolinas.
