Cop shot dead in Melbourne hotel incident


MELBOURNE, Florida. – A police officer was shot during an investigation at a hotel near Melbourne Orlando International Airport on Friday afternoon, according to the Melbourne Police Department.

Melbourne Police said they responded to a call for service at the Suburban Extended Stay Hotel near the airport at 4.56pm on Friday.

Melbourne Police Chief David Gillespie confirmed there were people barricaded in a hotel room and when trying to contact the person a police officer was shot.

Police said the officer was wearing his bulletproof vest. He was transported to an area hospital and is expected to be in good health.

Police say the two occupants of the room involved in the shooting have surrendered and are now in custody. Police said criminal charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Melbourne Police said two officers fired their weapons during the incident.

The injured officer is a 26-year veteran of the department, although his name is not being released at this time, police said.

Police said it was an isolated incident and no other threats were present.

No information has been released on the suspects involved in the shooting.
